Three-day photo event on Kythera

A new three-day event on photography will commence in late October on the island of Kythera under the artistic directorship of John Stathatos. «Kythera Photographic Encounters» initially grew out of a local need to institute a cultural event on the island. It will be held annually with the support of the Kythera Municipality, the Ministry of Culture and the Museum of Photography in Thessaloniki. The strongest and most distinct aspect of the Kythera exhibition will be its emphasis on theoretical approaches to photography. Structured around a conference that will bring together experts from all over the country to discuss issues pertaining to Greek photography, the Kythera event is the only one with such a strong focus on theory. This is what differentiates it from the other major events on photography in this country, the Photo Synkyria in Thessaloniki (involving exhibits and a round-table discussion), the Athens Month of Photography (which is mostly based on exhibits) and the Skopelos Photo event (mostly comprising workshops). Kythera Encounters will also grant a one-year scholarship to a young photographer selected by the organizing committee. There will also be exhibits on Greek photography, some specific to the island of Kythera. A highlight for this year is an exhibit on the late photographer Panayiotis Fatseas, whose archives were recently discovered.
