Paying tribute to a landmark dictionary

A major work of lexicography gets a tribute tonight at the Hellenic American Union (HAU). It’s the first volume of the «Modern Greek-English Dictionary» compiled and edited by Professor Demetrius Georgacas (1908-1990). With 65,000 entries covering just the letter A, the volume was published in 2005 by Aristide Caratzas. Ioannis Kazazis, head of lexicography at the Center for the Greek Language, is the publication’s director. Subsequent volumes will be published under the same direction by the Center for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki. Education Minister Evripidis Stylianidis will give a welcome address, and the dictionary will be presented by the publisher, the publication director and Christoforos Charalambakis, professor of linguistics at Athens University’s School of Philosophy. 8.30 p.m., HAU, 22 Massalias, tel 210.368.0900 (ext. 171).
