Athens theater offers Brecht, condensed and by donation

In an unusual step for local drama, the Schedia Theater in the capital’s downtown Gazi district is offering a pay-if-you-choose-at-the-end policy for its staging of a condensed version of «The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui» by Bertolt Brecht. The production, on now, has been translated by Benetta Economou and is directed by Vassilis Kanellopoulos. The theater company’s initiative reminds us of that taken by the popular British rock group Radiohead, whose most recent album, «In Rainbows,» was offered to fans as a free download with payment left to the discretion of each listener. Brecht’s play, a work from 1941, was written about Hitler’s rise in Germany. Performances, which opened last Wednesday, will run for a fortnight. The theater plans to restage the play in the fall.
