Grateful residents help Aristotle Onassis return to Nidri

His sleeves rolled up, his jacket slung over his shoulder and the initials ASO embroidered on his shirt, the legendary Greek, who hailed from Smyrna, has returned to Nidri on the island of Lefkada in the form of an outsize statue in bronze by Efthymis Kaleveras. The money for the sculpture was collected by the residents of Nidri to honor the man who put the resort on the map, when the nearby islet of Skorpios attracted the attention of the paparazzi, many of whom ended up in the sea while chasing Aristotle Onassis and his friends. This time, a light rain fell and all was quiet and emotional at the unveiling of the statue, which gazes across at Skorpios, by Onassis Foundation President Stelios Papadimitriou.
