Aegina’s fourth International Music Festival under way

The annual International Music Festival of Aegina started at the end of last week. Running for the fourth consecutive year, the event, which is under the artistic director of pianist Dora Bakopoulou, will run to September 5. Following the opening on Friday and weekend performances, the festival continues tonight with a recital by guitarist Varvara Gyra and cellist Yiannis Tsitselikis, who are scheduled to perform works by Bach, Vivaldi, Argentinean composers and others. Consisting of pianist Elena Hounda, violinist Stella Tsani, cellist Lefki Kolovou and viola player Michail Smirnov, the Ellemis Quartet will present a program of works by Haydn, Mahler and Brahms at Avra beach on Thursday. On Sunday, August 30, local musician Takis Farazis and his quartet will provide a wide-ranging performance featuring jazz and more. A special concert will mark the festival’s ending on September 5. Under the baton of Vyron Fidetzis, the Athens State Orchestra and soprano Julia Souglakou will perform arias and works by Mozart and Beethoven, including the introduction to Mozart’s opera «Idomeneo» as well as the aria «Come Scoglio,» from Mozart’s «Cosi fan Tutte.» Dedicated to the memory of Maria Callas, the concert has been jointly organized with the Andreas Kapsalis Foundation. All concerts take place at Avra beach, except for tonight’s recital which will be held at the Seegy Residence in Pachia Rachi.
