Record-breaking acquisitions in the Greek market

The Greek market saw a 15-year record in acquisitions of Greek companies in 2023, according to a report by PwC Greece on Wednesday.

Greek companies attracted total capital of 8.4 billion euros in 2023, PwC said, of which €5.9 billion resulted from mergers and acquisitions (M&A), €601 million from company share issues, €345 million from shareholder capital increase covered by strategic investors and €1.6 billion from privatizations, including disinvestments by the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund. In 2023, a total of 116 M&As took place. Of these, the five largest transactions totaled nearly €2.2 billion.

The transaction with the highest value was the Public Power Corporation’s purchase of Enel SpA’s subsidiaries in Romania, worth €1.24 billion. In terms of sectors, most transactions took place in the telecoms, mass media and technology sectors, with an increase in the energy and renewable energy sources sectors.

A quarter of all transactions were carried out by private capital companies, worth €1.5 billion, of which 24 transactions related to Greek-owned companies.
