Tax inspections to be speeded up

Tax inspections will be speeded up in order to avoid issues of limitations, the Finance Ministry has decided.

Kathimerini understands that Deputy Finance Minister Haris Theoharis considers limiting tax investigations to one year, except for some more complicated cases regarding large businesses, including multinationals.

The move is expected to bring in more revenue from additional taxes and fines.

Advances in technology have made it easier to complete tax inspections faster, but more personnel is needed, Finance Ministry sources said, adding that hirings are expected.

By the end of November 2023, there were 22,198 active tax investigation cases, many languishing for years.

By current legislation, tax cases face a statute of limitations of five years, with some specified exemptions, for example, when income acquired abroad is involved. This means that inspections on income acquired in 2018, which shows on 2019 tax filings, can no longer be investigated after the end of this year. These limitation provisions are not expected to change.
