Surprise drop in February inflation to 4.4 pct

Greece?s consumer price index showed an unexpected drop in February, slowing to an annual pace of 4.4 percent, from 5.2 percent in January, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Thursday.

Economists had expected the rate to remain steady at January’s level.

A breakdown of the figures showed that clothing and footwear price dropped 9.9 percent in February, while the cost of alcoholic drinks and tobacco jumped 19.2 percent. Transport costs rose 12 percent year-on-year, ELSTAT added.
