Optimism buoys index

Investors appeared certain of a positive outcome to the European Union summit in Brussels and showed strong buying interest during the week?s last bourse session on Friday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,580.90 points, rising 2.33 percent from Thursday?s close at 1,544.88 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 2.71 percent to end at 731.17 points.

All but one blue chip headed north, led by ATEbank (up 5.41 percent), Marfin Investment Group (5.26 percent), Hellenic Postbank (4.60 percent), Alpha Bank (4.24 percent) and National Bank (3.82 percent). Jumbo was the only loser, ending down 0.17 percent.

In total, 118 stocks moved up, 44 went down and 55 remained unchanged. Lambrakis Press led the gainers with growth of 14.89 percent, while Atlantic Supermarkets posted the biggest loss, amounting to 20 percent.

Turnover came to 109.1 million euros, up from 74.7 million on Thursday.
