Banks bear brunt of blue chip losses

The Athens bourse shed most of Wednesday?s sizable gains on Thursday, with several banks bearing the brunt of uncertainty and selling pressure and posting double-digit percentage losses in thin trade.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 886.77 points, down 4.59 percent.

The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dived 5.53 percent to end at 369.93 points.

Banks were down 8.19 percent at 530.0 points, just above the session lows.

Among FTSE/ATHEX 20 blue chips, Alpha Bank plunged 12.63 percent to 1.73 euros, Hellenic Postbank dived 10.57 percent to 1.10 euros and National Bank slumped 10.56 percent to 3.05 euros. Only Bank of Cyprus and Jumbo headed north.

Turnover totaled 56.2 million euros, while 91 shares declined, 41 rose and 146 remained unchanged.
