Local stock index edges up

The Greek bourse continued its sluggish rise on Thursday, posting moderate gains for blue chips and minimal losses for mid-caps, as the main index saw most of the rise registered by early afternoon evaporate before the end of the session.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 739.97 points, adding 0.61 percent to Wednesday?s closing figure of 735.51. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 0.73 percent to 297.04 points, but the mid-cap FTSE/ATHEX 40 index contracted by 0.14 percent.

Public Power Corporation led the blue chips with a rise of 5.86 percent, while Mytilineos followed with gains of 5.51 percent. Marfin Popular Bank declined by 3.03 percent.

In total, 60 stocks moved up, 61 went down and 50 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 55.8 million euros, against Wednesday?s 43.3 million.
