Drivers give up plates

Taxpayers formed long queues outside tax offices on Tuesday as thousands are reluctantly submitting their cars? registration plates to avoid having to pay the road tax, while also being unable to afford the high maintenance costs of their vehicles now that salaries are being cut and jobs lost.

Another reason for drivers submitting their registration plates is the high price of fuel. Taxpayers who sign papers stating they will not move their cars for the next 12 months will also have to show that they legitimately own a parking space, where the vehicle will have to remain idle for the whole of next year.

Among the queuers there were some who intended to reclaim their license plates and move their cars, but they represented a small minority.
