LAOS departure sends bourse?s index tumbling

Political developments in Athens resulted in investor jitters on Friday, with the departure of the right-wing party LAOS from the coalition government in the afternoon sending the main index below the 800-point level at the end of the session.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 797.35 points, shedding 3.23 percent from Thursday?s closing level of 823.96 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 4.68 percent to end at 328.91 points.

Banks took a dive, with Piraeus dropping 9.81 percent, Alpha 9.38 percent and Eurobank EFG 9.28 percent.

In total, 49 stocks registered gains, 102 posted losses and 23 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 85.8 million euros, against Thursday?s 106.2 million.
