Stocks edge higher in day of shrinking bourse trade

Despite healthy gains for most banks, the main index of the Greek bourse failed to clear the 700-point level on Wednesday, while turnover continued to shrink, to the fourth lowest level of the year to date.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended the day at 698.03 points, marginally (0.03 percent) higher than Tuesday?s closing figure of 697.82 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index inched up 0.29 percent to close at 268.77 points.

Marfin Investment Group led the blue chips with gains of 7.09 percent, followed by Bank of Cyprus (up 6.98 percent) and Hellenic Postbank (5.29 percent), while OTE telecom was the worst off, shedding 3.55 percent.

In total, 56 stocks registered gains, 57 posted losses and 35 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to just 21.1 million euros, down from Tuesday?s 22.6 million.
