Stock index falls 7 pct as investor doubts take heavy toll

The local bourse suffered heavy losses on Monday amid an atmosphere of general worries regarding the course of the eurozone, which weighed on most European markets, and doubts over the new government?s ailing members.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 566.79 points, shedding 6.84 percent from last Friday?s 608.41 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index contracted by 8.57 percent to close at 208.26 points.

Banks declined by a massive 13.88 percent, as Alpha Bank lost 18.40 percent and Eurobank EFG slumped 16.31 percent. However, Public Power Corporation performed even worse, diving 18.50 percent.

In total, 28 stocks posted gains, 94 recorded losses and 22 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 41 million euros, down from Friday?s 45.5 million.
