Minister opposes further wage cuts [UPDATE]

Labor and Social Security Minister Yiannis Vroutsis on Wednesday expressed his opposition to further cuts to the minimum wage following talks with the leader of the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE), Greece’s largest umbrella union, Yiannis Panagopoulos.

The GSEE leader, for his part, demanded that collective labor contracts should be applied following ‘free negotiations’ with unions, not in accordance with ministry laws.

Before the launch of Wednesday’s talks, GSEE said it has decided to hold a 24-hour strike the date of which has yet to be set. Panagopoulos did not elaborate on this after the talks. #

The union has demanded that any collective agreement be signed under the aegis of the International Labor Organization ‘so there can be no room for doubt.’
