Disappointing end to week of gains for local bourse

In the absence of any good news from the European summit in Brussels, the local bourse’s main index ended its five-session rising streak on Friday, sustaining moderate losses.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 845.04 points, shedding 0.21 percent from Thursday’s closing figure of 846.80 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index gave up 0.20 percent to close at 303.65 points.

Driven by reports of an imminent deal between Nicosia, the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund regarding a loan for Cyprus, Cypriot lenders’ stocks on the Athens bourse enjoyed major gains: Cyprus Popular Bank outperformed, adding 11.32 percent, while Bank of Cyprus gained 7.24 percent.

In total 71 stocks went up, 63 declined and 30 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 58.7 million euros, down from Thursday’s 77.7 million.
