Santorini expecting visitors to top record of 1.9 mln achieved in 2011

Santorini tourism industry professionals expect that the number of visitors this year may even exceed even the record 1.9 million attained in 2011.

About half of last year’s 1.7 million arrived by cruise ship and around half-a-million by boat. The island has seen a spectacular rise in the number of visitors from China, even in winter.

The Aegean island is undertaking a number of initiatives to bolster niche forms of tourism, including gastronomy shows and the conservation of old footpaths, as well as the creation of a geology museum and a sea park, the latter in collaboration with Pierre-Yves Cousteau, son of the late Jacques Cousteau.
