Greek merchant marine services abroad set to close
Thirteen out of 22 merchant marine services, part of Greek general consulates abroad, are set to close following a decision by Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis.
The move will save the Greek state 800,000 euros annually. The funds are expected to be redirected toward the maintainance and repair of Greek coast guard vessels as well as the reinforcement of the country’s border controls.
Replacing the existing services will be merchant marine attaches who will be appointed at ports observing high merchant marine activity.
Attaches are expected to be appointed in Venezuela, on the US west coast, in Dubai, Panama and Perth, Australia.
