Four-month peak for bourse’s benchmark index

Stocks on the Greek bourse posted a significant rise on Thursday following news that the leader of Golden Dawn would remain in custody pending trial. The benchmark index climbed to levels unseen since May 28, while turnover increased too.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,033.25 points, growing by 2.13 percent from Wednesday’s 1,011.67 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 added 1.83 percent to end at 346.90 points.

OPAP rose to a new year-high, adding 5.23 percent, followed by Viohalco (up 4.70 percent), Alpha Bank (4.68 percent) and Terna Energy (4.46 percent).

Jumbo (down 0.54 percent) and Coca-Cola HBC (0.47 percent) were the day’s biggest losers.

In total 80 stocks registered gains, 47 showed losses and 21 stayed put.

Turnover amounted to 59.3 million euros, up from Tuesday’s 42.2 million.
