Canadian market holds great promise for feta producers
A market worth a potential 35 million euros per year will open up for Greek feta producers once the free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada is put into practice, providing for the feta name to be used exclusively by Greek products.
Out of the estimated 6,000 tons of feta consumed by Canadians every year, just 482 tons are currently imported from Greece, while the bulk is in the form of domestic produce as well as imports from Denmark, Bulgaria and even Italy.
Canadian feta production amounted to 5,118 tons last year, according to the Canadian Dairy Information Center.
