Almost 10 pct of firms checked not paying social security contributions

Almost 10 percent of businesses checked during September and October were found not to be paying their social security contributions, Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis said on Monday.

A total of 3,931 businesses were inspected between September 15 and the end of the October. It was found that 371 firms, or 9.44 percent of those checked, were employing workers for whom they were not paying social security contributions.

Out of almost 19,000 employees checked, just over 3 percent were found not to have social insurance.

This led to fines totalling 5.9 million euros being imposed on the offending businesses.
