Finance Ministry says tax on ATM withdrawals not in the cards

A few hours after Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said the Greek government was considering the introduction of a small levy on ATM withdrawals, the ministry issued a statement saying that such a measure is not in the cards.

“In the context of negotiations at the Brussels Group, a proposal was made to introduce a tax on bank transactions,” the statement said.

“The Finance Ministry disagreed and emphasized that, at least as far as the use of plastic money, web banking and wire transfers are concerned, the proposal in question runs against the ministry’s policy of providing incentives to reduce cash transactions.”

It said that following the ministry’s objections, the proposal had been withdrawn from the negotiating table.
