Favorable outlook on the jobs front
The prospects for salaried employment in Greece are positive, but there are conditions attached, according to a ManpowerGroup survey, while job hirings continued to outnumber departures last month. In spite of the continued economic turbulence, the job growth trend is expected to continue in the third quarter of the year, which is dominated by summer tourism.
The ManpowerGroup report shows that 18 percent of employers expect an increase in the number of people employed, 7 percent foresee a decline and 70 percent anticipate no change at all in the July-September 2015 period. Total employment prospects are positive by 7 percent, but they are also down by three percentage points from the second quarter.
The Labor Ministry’s Ergani salaried employment database showed that 86,146 new jobs were created last month, up by 26,676 from last year, although job departures also increased. Most sackings (9,124) were in the education sector last month, owing to it being the end of the school year.
In the first five months of the year there was a positive balance of 194,533 jobs, compared with a surplus of 160,946 in the same period of 2014.
