For tax-exempt medical expenses, get used to paying with plastic

It is possible that only medical spending paid with debit or credit cards will be accepted by tax authorities and continue to be tax-exempt, as interim Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis has confirmed that this is one of the scenarios the ministry is examining.

The relevant draft legislation will have to be ready next month, as the agreement reached by Athens and its creditors on August 14 provides.

This is not only aimed at expanding taxpayers’ card payments but also at combating tax evasion, which is believed to be quite sizable in the healthcare sector.
