Brussels rejects Greek arguments on shipping’s tax status

Brussels is toughening up its stance vis-a-vis the Greek tax framework for shipping.

A letter sent to Athens this week by European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager rejects the government’s argument that the tax status of shipping in Greece should remain unchanged because shipping companies are already overtaxed.

It also calls for ‘appropriate’ amendments to the legislative framework to take place within the next 24 months and to apply as of January 2019, otherwise the Commission will refer Athens to the European Court of Justice.
