ATHEX: Alpha leads blue chips in mixed session

The Greek bourse produced mixed results on Wednesday, with the majority of stocks posting losses while the gains recorded by banks buoyed the benchmark to a small increase at the end of the session. Traders are apparently waiting for the conclusion of next Tuesday’s Eurogroup meeting before positioning themselves in the market with more resolve.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 628.29 points, adding 0.31 percent to Tuesday’s 626.37 points. The large-cap FTSE 25 index expanded 0.41 percent to end at 177.33 points, but small-caps fell 0.10 percent.

Alpha Bank continued its steady growth, advancing 4.35 percent on Wednesday to climb to 2.40 euros – its share capital increase had taken place at 2 euros per share. GEK Terna followed with a 2.76 percent rise and OPAP enjoyed 1.95 percent growth. Eurobank declined 1.87 percent, Mytilineos contracted 1.78 percent, and Piraeus Port Authority and Grivalia Properties gave up 1.72 percent.

In total 37 stocks reported gains, 52 took losses and 22 ended unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 73.4 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 104.6 million.

In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange improved 1 percent to close at 67.91 points.
