Shipowners call for limits on CO2
Greek shipowners yesterday reiterated their determination to follow the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding environmental regulations and stressed their will to work hard to convince the global shipping community to adopt new policies for the environment. Speaking at a press conference on the last day of the Posidonia 2008 shipping exhibition in Piraeus, the president of the Greek Union of Shipowners (EEE), Nikos Efthymiou, said that shipowners will ‘fully support any IMO initiative designed to wipe out any carbon dioxide emissions in the sector.’ ‘We want solutions that will reduce CO2 emissions, solutions which will be universally accepted and immediately applicable,’ said Efthymiou. He also expressed the group’s intention to begin a campaign in order to attract young Greeks to the maritime professions.
