Surge continues for second day
Stocks in the Greek market continued rising yesterday after a cautious start to the day, with most extending the gains they recorded on Thursday. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) closed at 3,406.76 points, 2.24 percent higher than on Thursday. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index rose by 3.04 percent to 1,870.75 points. Local stocks followed the pattern set by most European bourses after the lower than expected losses announced by Citigroup. Banks were once again outperforming among blue chips. led by National (up 6.19 percent), EFG Eurobank (6.12 percent), Alpha (4.35 percent) and Marfin Popular (4.21 percent). Small-caps had a somewhat listless session, as their index posted a moderate 0.37 percent rise. Turnover reached 313.8 million euros.
