Athens bourse down 1.18 pct

The Athens Exchange’s (ATHEX) benchmark general index shed more than 1 percent yesterday to end at 3,370.04 points. Analysts said late-session buying interest helped moderate losses. Banks gave up more than 1 percent after a new write-down at Wall Street bank Merrill Lynch sent financial stocks across Europe reeling. The Athens bourse’s general index shrank by 1.18 percent, ending the day slightly off a session high of 3,378 points. EFG Eurobank, which is scheduled to report first-half earnings today, advanced 1.68 percent to 15.76 euros. OTE telecom gained 0.59 percent to 13.58 euros. Losers beats gainers 139 to 76 with 58 shares unchanged. Turnover reached 166.8 million euros versus 138.4 million euros in the previous session.
