Papandreou, Barroso meet in Brussels

PASOK leader George Papandreou (left) met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso (right) in Brussels yesterday in his capacity as head of Socialist International. Papandreou said that Europe needs to adjust to current conditions and protect small and medium-sized businesses and jobs. ‘At a time of extraordinary needs, during this economic crisis, it is necessary that the tools and policies, such as the Growth Pact and the European Central Bank, adjust,’ said the head of the Greek Socialist party. Meanwhile, EU finance ministers backed proposals in Brussels yesterday to reform the world’s top financial fora and end market self-regulation that critics say has caused the worst financial crisis since the 1930s Great Depression.
