Artworks go under the hammer

More than 250 art lovers sought the refuge of a secure investment in the pieces of art sold off in a recent auction held by Vergos Auctions. Despite the negative investment climate created by the global financial crisis, buyers who attended the auction at Zappeion Hall, central Athens, on November 20 spent 610,000 euros, acquiring 180 of the 260 artworks on offer. Exhibits with a starting price of less than 6,000 euros were included in the sale, in accordance with Vergos Auctions’ policy. Since Wednesday, 208 pieces by Greek artists have been on show at Zappeion Hall and are scheduled to go under the hammer tomorrow at 6 p.m. Works by artists such as Nikolaos Gyzis, Nikolaos Lytras and Yiannis Moralis will be included in the auction. Additionally, on December 17, more than 500 rare books, etchings and letters will be available for purchase for those seeking an alternative investment.
