OPAP, OTE not enough for rise

The rise of OPAP and OTE telecom stocks was not enough to reverse the negative course of the Greek bourse’s main index, mostly due to pressure on bank stocks. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,738.49 points yesterday, declining by 0.46 percent from Wednesday’s close, although it had posted gains during the day. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 0.90 percent to 892.62 points. Leading blue chips were the stocks of OPAP (up 6.32 percent), Bank of Cyprus (2.85 percent), Viohalco (1.89 percent) and OTE (1.43 percent). Moving southward were the stocks of Alpha Bank (down 5.71 percent), Hellenic Postbank (5.14 percent), Piraeus Bank (4.51 percent), EFG Eurobank (4.04 percent) and Public Power Corporation (3.96 percent). Turnover came to 162.2 million euros.
