Most exporting sectors set to suffer as demand drops

The global crisis will have a negative impact on Greek exports, particularly on certain key outward-looking sectors, according to the Export Research Center of the Panhellenic Exporters’ Association. Worst hit will be branches related to industrial production, such as nonferrous metals, to construction materials, such as cement, to products whose demand depends primarily on income levels, such as apparel, and to the majority of food products that Greece exports. Other sectors affected will be petroleum products, due to the drop in oil prices, as well as iron, steel, plastic, tobacco and its products. These goods accounted for two-thirds of Greek exports in 2007.
