Athens bourse retreats 1 pct

Greek stocks fell more than 1 percent yesterday, failing to track moderate gains on European bourses, as weak blue chips outweighed modest mid-cap gains. The Athens Exchange’s benchmark general index eased 1.06 percent to 1,744.46 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index fell 1.47 percent to 885.00 points, while the mid-cap FTSE/ASE 40 index rose by 0.40 percent. Banks fell 1.84 percent, bringing losses in the last month to just over 13 percent. Public Power Corporation outperformed, gaining 1.54 percent to 13.20 euros, after the company’s board of directors approved the 2009 budget, which envisages a profit for this year. Turnover reached 112.2 million euros versus 79 million in the previous session.
