Red tape hampers solar energy market expansion

The solar energy market remains in the dark in this country due to bureaucratic problems, according to the Hellenic Association of Photovoltaic Companies. In 2008 some 10 megawatts of photovoltaic systems were installed in Greece and sales of about 20 megawatts, amounting to some 100 million euros, were realized. The association describes these figures as «negligible» given the 5,500 MW installed internationally last year. Companies in the sector are calling on the authorities to make the legal framework more specific and proceed with the licensing of thousands of projects that have long been stalled, despite a 2009 law that has set strict deadlines.
