Papandreou in China for high-level talks

George Papandreou (left), president of Greece’s main opposition PASOK party, met in Beijing yesterday with Wang Jiarui, head of the Chinese Communist Party’s International Department. Papandreou is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and local officials on environmentally friendly investments, including construction projects, during his two-day visit. Ties between the two countries have improved in recent years after Athens and Beijing each hosted consecutive Olympic Games. Over half of Greeks believe China’s growing power on the world stage is a positive development, according to a recent survey. President Hu made an official visit to Greece late last year to finalize a deal for the management of two container terminals at the port of Piraeus.
