Rise continues for local stocks

Stocks posted gains yesterday, despite suffering losses for most of the day and in contrast to mostly downbeat international markets. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index rose to 2,309.08 points yesterday, gaining 0.62 percent on Wednesday’s close and just shy of the year-high set last week. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 0.66 percent to end higher at 1,193.67 points. The biggest rise among blue chips was for Titan cement (up 5.97 percent), Marfin Investment Group (5.19 percent) and Bank of Cyprus (3.11 percent). Heading southward were Hellenic Petroleum (down 2.80 percent) and Mytilineos (1.85 percent). The insurance index outperformed the market with an impressive 11.14 percent daily rise, on top of its already 10.92 percent growth on Wednesday. Turnover reached 214.5 million euros.
