Macedonian Airlines to take flight

Fire trucks spray water over a plane belonging to newly launched Olympic Air in Thessaloniki in celebration of the airline’s inauguration yesterday. Marfin Investment Group (MIG) bought lossmaking Olympic Airlines earlier this year from the government and launched its flight operations under its new name, Olympic Air. MIG Vice Chairman Andreas Vgenopoulos said the airline will also launch a new subsidiary in the coming months called Macedonian Airlines. ‘No one else can fly with this name,’ Vgenopoulos said. The new subsidiary is expected to initially fly from Thessaloniki to Germany and Amsterdam, according to sources. Vgenopoulos is expected to soon hold meetings with business and tourism groups in northern Greece to determine their flight travel needs.
