US data news moderates drop

The sharp decline in Greek stocks from the start of yesterday’s session until early yesterday afternoon eventually ended with moderate losses. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index declined to 2,669.63 points yesterday, falling by 1.56 percent from Tuesday’s close at 2,711.96 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index dropped by 1.52 percent to end at 1,422.37 points. The country’s downgrade threat by Moody’s and the losses that European bourses had incurred on Wednesday, when the Greek market was closed, sent the main index to minus 4.16 percent during the day. But when the news from the unexpected growth data in the US filtered through, losses were limited. ATEbank saw the largest growth among blue chips (up 5.98 percent) while the biggest losses were for OTE telecom (down 3.31 percent). Turnover came to 457.4 million euros.
