Banks sending index lower

Stocks on the local bourse posted small losses yesterday in another session with very thin trade, despite the positive momentum seen in other European markets. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,196.03 points yesterday, contracting by 0.56 percent from Monday’s close at 2,208.34 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index declined by 0.68 percent to end at 1,128.48 points. Once again it was banks that sustained most of the pressure, with National Bank dropping by 1.74 percent, Eurobank losing 2.50 percent and Marfin Popular Bank falling by 1.72 percent, but Bank of Cyprus climbing 1.43 percent. There were also gains for Public Power Corporation, Coca-Cola HBC, Intralot, Marfin Investment Group and Titan. Turnover amounted to 68.4 million euros, up from 54 million euros on Monday.
