Punters, young and old, eye lottery winnings

Youngsters are seen in Athens yesterday choosing a ticket for the New Year’s lottery that will award some lucky punter 15 million euros. The draw of the state run lottery will be held tomorrow evening. Figures released recently showed that the economic crisis has made gamblers think twice before taking a chance. Greece’s nine casinos have reported a drop in revenues of 6 to 35 percent for the first 11 months of 2009 relative to the previous year’s figures. Casinos are hoping to cover lost ground during the busy festive season. A breakdown of the figures shows that the slide in revenue is not due to fewer casino patrons but rather to less spending by each customer.
