Stocks may add to gains today

Moderate gains on Wall Street and European bourses late yesterday, when the Athens exchange was closed due to the Epiphany public holiday, may support a further advance of Greek stocks today after the market’s recent strong performance. Bargain hunting by investors on Tuesday sent Greek stocks 4.01 percent higher, helping to push the general index away from oversold levels. The benchmark general index ended at 2,277.60 points. Brokers said investors favored stocks that had taken a beating recently, with a focus on bank shares. Eurobank jumped 9 percent to 8.48 euros, Piraeus Bank added 7.18 percent to 8.36 euros while peer Alpha ended at 8.80 euros, up 8.64 percent. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index added 4.92 percent to end at 1,173.08 points. Turnover rose to 193.6 million euros from 61 million in the previous session.
