Psyrri beer theft ends in student’s death

For the three students rollicking home at dawn yesterday after a night on the town, the unguarded beer bottles seemed a legitimate target. Their owner disagreed. Shopowner Constantinos Malamatenios, 32, saw two youths and a young woman lift three beers from a crate in his pick-up truck on Karaiskaki Street, in the trendy Psyrri district of central Athens, and strongly remonstrated with them. But at 6 a.m., and having spent most of the night at a local nightspot, Klimis Katsoufis, 22, Ioannis Xintaras, 21, and Dimitra Korovessi, 23, were in no mood to be told off. In the pushing and shoving that followed, Katsoufis suddenly fell down in a faint and died on the way to hospital. According to the coroner’s report, the slight bruises on Katsoufis’s body could not have caused his death, and police have now ordered a toxicological examination. The three survivors were arrested.
