Ecstasy raids net 6,800 pills

As a dozen people were charged in Athens yesterday with dealing in large quantities of the ecstasy party drug, police in Thessaloniki arrested another two suspects with 5,000 ecstasy pills. It was unclear whether the two cases were related, as Thessaloniki police are to release the details of the arrest – reportedly involving two foreign nationals – today. Athens’s security police chief, Vassilis Tsiatouras, said 12 people aged 19-35 were arrested in a Saturday night raid on a Kypseli flat. Seven of the suspects are believed to have been members of a drug-dealing gang, while the others had visited the flat to buy pills – 1,800 of which were seized. Meanwhile, a convict returning to Halicarnassos Prison on Crete after a 10-day leave was arrested at Athens Airport for possession of 26 grams of heroin he apparently proposed to sell to fellow-inmates, police said yesterday. Vlasios Papachristou, 38, had been carrying most of the drugs in 11 little plastic packages that he had swallowed.
