Two more bodies found in migrant boat sinking off Evia

Another two bodies were recovered by the Greek Coast Guard in the waters off the island of Evia on Thursday, raising the number of confirmed dead from the sinking of a boat carrying migrants to 22.

A total of 12 people have so far been rescued, after the boat capsized in the area on Tuesday. Among the victims are 11 men, six women and five children (three boys and two girls). According to the survivors, there were 68 people on the boat.

The boat sank after it ran into trouble in very rough seas and eventually capsized and sank in the notoriously treacherous Kafireas Strait, between the islands of Evia and Andros.

The search-and-rescue operation is continuing, with the assistance of a patrol boat, a coast guard helicopter and other vessels sailing nearby.
