Turkish national arrested for migrant trafficking

A 32-year-old Turkish national was arrested early Wednesday for trafficking migrants, police announced on Thursday.

The man is accused of driving a speedboat with four irregular migrants and dropping them off to the shore of Skandari, on the island of Kos. The speedboat, which lacked navigation lights, did not respond to the Coast Guard patrol vessel’s signals to stop but instead picked up speed and headed for the Turkish coast.

Following a pursuit, during which the suspect carried out dangerous manoeuvres, the Coast Guard shot the speedboat’s engine and the vessel stopped.

Searching in the surrounding area, officers located four foreign nationals, including two minors.
