EU summit to go ahead

Greece’s partners in the European Union agreed to an emergency summit in Brussels on Monday «after many discussions,» government spokesman Christos Protopappas said yesterday. The European Commission praised the initiative of Greece, which holds the EU presidency, for calling the summit, saying it was an opportunity for member states to look for common ground, forge a common position and start a dialogue on a very difficult issue. But Greek officials were under no illusion that the informal summit could paper over the divisions between EU members regarding their support for the United States in its desire for swift action against Iraq. Officials in Athens believe that nothing will prevent war. Protopappas voiced support for Turkey’s request for assistance, saying, «If a NATO state invokes Article 4 we cannot oppose it.»
