New Left call for censure motion over unis rebuffed

Main opposition parties SYRIZA and PASOK, along with communist KKE, rejected the idea of filing a motion of no confidence against the government over the education bill to institutionalize non-state universities, as proposed by New Left leader Alexis Haritsis.

Reportedly, the timing and formulation of strategy for the European elections leave no room for proposals for concerted action to thrive, with each party now seeking to chart its own course.

This became evident on Wednesday with the reception reserved by the other center-left parties for Haritsis’ proposal for a joint motion tabled by MPs from the New Left, SYRIZA, PASOK, KKE, and Course of Freedom.

Procedurally, 50 votes are required for a motion of no confidence to be tabled, and currently none of the opposition parties have this parliamentary strength on their own.
