Police shoot dead two fugitives from Trikala prison [Update]

Police said late on Tuesday that they shot dead two of the inmates that escaped from Trikala Prison in central Greece earlier this year.

Authorities said that the two men, whose names were not made public, were killed after being cornered by the police’s special EKAM unit near the town of Koniska in central Greece. Another three fugitives were being sought.

Unconfirmed reports suggested that one of the dead inmates was 25-year-old Edison Lika and that the other was a relative of his, also a fugitive, who had organized the prison break and had subsequently joined the group.

Sources for Kathimerini said that the two Albanians had been located in the area of Thermo in central Greece on Monday through the use of thermographic cameras.

While they have been on the run, the fugitives have been linked to the death of a 25-year-old woman and a 37-year-old policeman at a road block near the village of Distomo last month.

A total of 11 Albanian inmates had escaped from the prison in March.
